Happy Memorial Day!

As we begin the holiday weekend, let’s remember that Memorial Day isn’t truly about the barbecuing and the parties.  It’s not about having an extra day off from work.  It’s about honoring and remembering the ultimate sacrifices our servicemen and servicewomen have made for this glorious country. Without them, we wouldn’t be land of the free and home of the brave.  Here in Fairfield, many residents honor those who have served by keeping with the tradition of the Annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (located at 661 Old Post Road), and then wait for the parade to march on by with our Veterans.   The delicious and FUN Pancake Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.  The men and boys of St. Paul’s gather to serve thousands of pancakes, sausages, and drinks to the crowd that gathers around the Town Hall Green while waiting for the parade to go by.for the parade to go by.

All servicemen and servicewomen receive breakfast at no charge in recognition and appreciation for their service to our country, and all proceeds go to outreach!   Past years’ recipients have been Habitat for Humanity; Operation Hope; Bishop Curry’s malaria prevention project (mosquito netting to people in Mozambique); Holy Trinity Elementary School in Port au-Prince, Haiti and Fairfield’s “Wheels of Hope” bicycle program.1004

The Fairfield Parade begins at 10 a.m.  It starts at the Post Road and South Pine Creek Road and progresses to Old Post Road to Flint’s Corner, down Old Post Road and ends at South Benson Road.  At the end of the parade, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal will give a speech at the reviewing stand in front of Town Hall and near the Memorial Wall. Following the speech, the town will hold its annual town picnic with music, food and other activities.

If you haven’t been to this wonderful event, you won’t want to miss it.  It truly is a wonderful way to honor our country’s true heroes while celebrating all of life’s blessings with family and friends.   And, no matter where you live in Fairfield County, there are several other Memorial Day happenings on Monday that you can go and enjoy!   Here is a list of parades and other events for this upcoming weekend:Memorial-Day-Float-Ideas-1
