The 11th of November, a Day To Remember the Men & Women that Serve… Some Helpful Resources for CT Veterans!

(Veteran Discount at Bottom of Page)

Thank you to all the courageous men and women who served our country and to their families for providing them with continuous love and support! Words cannot express how grateful we are for your service.

November 11th is one of the most important days in the United States.  November 11th is a day to give thanks, a day to celebrate, remember and to be inspired by the men and women in the US Armed Forces that have served, and continue to serve our country every day.  November 11th is Veterans Day,  a day to celebrate our US Veterans, past and present.

We are still blessed to have men and women from World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and even the Cold War but many Veterans today are as young as 22 years old, returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans Day is an important day for me because it celebrates my father, an US Army Veteran, my uncles and grandfather, as well as my good friend James, a Marine Corps Sergeant who served in the War in Iraq.

We wanted to pay tribute and say THANK YOU to our Veterans as well as list some resources and benefits available for Veterans. There are many national organizations available to help as well as some local organizations that offer different benefits available to Veterans.

A few websites we have found to be the most useful are, and The Department of Veteran Affairs and MilitaryOneSource.

Home Purchasing Benefits

VA Loans are loans available to Veterans to purchase a home at competitive interest rates with little to no down payment or mortgage insurance required.  Loans are done through private mortgage companies, like William Raveis Mortgage, (ask for Mark Hawkins!), but the VA stands behind all loans, guaranteeing a portion of it, should any issues arise. This is a benefit that can be used more than once for a Veteran purchasing a home but your loan cannot exceed $601,450 in Fairfield County. We are happy to provide you with a list of banks that are experts in working with Veterans and the VA Loan service.

Property Tax Exemptions

According to, in the state of Connecticut, “Veterans, who have ninety days of wartime service, including Merchant Marines, who served during WWII, are eligible for a $1,500 exemption for property tax purposes (e.g., real property or automobiles). You have the option to choose to apply this exemption to your real estate or automobile tax. Certain veterans, who do not own real property or a motor vehicle, may be eligible for a tax refund if they are leasing a motor vehicle.”  Who doesn’t love a tax break!

 Education Benefits

In 1985 The Montgomery GI Bill expanded on our original GI Bill for education for service men and women.  Today, more changes have been made and our military uses the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans who are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program have served an aggregate period of 36 months in active duty after Sept. 10, 2001 and  were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001.  If eligible the Post 9/11 GI Bill will pay all residential tuition & fees for a public school and/or the lower of the actual tuition & fees or the national maximum per academic year for a private school
